MSI NEWS - for Therapists on the Move
March 2010
We
hope you had a great start to the year. Did you know that:
New
Zealand is tops!
The
authors of the Lonely Planet travel guides have chosen NZ as one of the
Top 10 countries in the world to visit.
Writer
Nigel Wallis, who compiled the section on New Zealand, joked that readers
might think he had run out of ideas in recommending New Zealand again
- "too obvious, right?"
"But
there's wisdom in the old saying, `If it ain't broke, don't fix it',
and the last time we checked the land of Maori and hobbits, certainly
they didn't need repairing," he said.
"NZ's
checklist of essential experiences remains as strong as ever."
And
if you’re wondering what other countries are in the Top 10 list
- they include El Salvador, Germany, Greece, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal,
Portugal, Suriname and the United States.
This
type of coverage is great news for all of us! Having a powerful publisher
such as the Lonely Planet verify what we all know gives us the opportunity
to use this positive news to continue to attract top-quality overseas
candidates to fulfil your staffing needs.

Achievement Awards Update
Medical
Staffing International Award for Achievement in Speech and Language Therapy
Entries
have now closed for this award but unfortunately due to low entry numbers
and therefore the lack of a clear winner, the NZSTA have decided not
to bestow an award this year. Please keep this award in mind as an excellent
way of encouraging and rewarding your Speech and Language Therapy staff
and make sure they get their entries in for next year’s award.
Keep checking our
website for all the information you need to apply for this outstanding
opportunity. Please let your teams know too.
NZSP/Medical
Staffing International Achievement Award for Physiotherapy
This
award has also closed for the year and entries are being considered at
present. We’ll let you know who the winner is in our next newsletter,
but if you just can’t wait to know, keep watching our
website to find out who this year’s stand-out professional
is.
Medical
Staffing International/NZAOT Achievement Award
Exciting news for a past winner, Grace O’Sullivan has gone on
to win the prestigious Frances Rutherford Lecture Award for 2010. Grace
was awarded this honour in recognition of her commitment to advocating
for the profession in her daily work and particularly for occupational
justice for the elderly. We congratulate Grace on this outstanding
achievement. Grace will deliver her Frances Rutherford Lecture at the Shifting
Sands Conference in Nelson this September.
There
is still plenty of time to enter this year’s Medical
Staffing International/NZAOT Achievement Award. The entry deadline
for 2010 is Wednesday 30 June. So please encourage your staff to enter,
we know you appreciate their outstanding work and this is a great way
to recognise them publicly.
Detailed
information about the application requirements and process can be found
on our
website - please do pass this on to your team.

Professional
Corner
Professional
registration year coming to an end on 31st March 2010
This
is relevant to all Physiotherapists, Occupational
Therapists, Dieticians, Podiatrists,
and Radiation Therapists currently
registered in New Zealand.
Some of your staff may have moved house in the last year – it’s
a good time to remind your team to update their relevant Boards with
any changed contact details so they don’t miss out. Staff returning
overseas often forget to update the Board and subsequently end up being
taken off the register, as they cannot be located. This may have implications
for them should they wish to return to New Zealand in the future, or
even getting back on the register in their home country. So while it
may not be a priority right now it will be beneficial in the long-term.
